Community Health Spotlight: An Illuminating Q & A

We launch our “Spotlight” series with Amy Peeler, our former Executive Director who left in late August to take the position of Chief of Clinical Services at the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency.

Amy leaves an endearing legacy of accomplishments at the Women's Health Center, including pioneering the Promotores de Salud program; increasing access to care for low-income, uninsured and homeless patients; leading implementation of the Electronic Health Records system; and building positive relationships everywhere she went, with other safety net providers, patients, volunteers and donors.

We will miss her infectious smile (and fabulous footwear!), and are pleased that she will continue to be involved in our mission of providing quality and affordable health service, albeit in a different role.

What brought you to the Santa Cruz area?

The weather and my closest friend who had moved here earlier in the year (1996).

What is your connection the Santa Cruz Women’s Health Center?

I started as clinic manager in 2007 and became Executive Director in 2010.

Tell us something you are excited about.

I am excited about National Health Reform! I am excited to see so many people finally realize what I believe is a civil right — access to affordable quality health care.

What are you most grateful for?

Our beautiful county, my health, the possibility of a future where people can see a provider without having to sacrifice food on their table, my ability to sleep.

If you could change one thing in your life right now, what would it be?

I would like to live closer to my mom and dad.

If the Women’s Health Center could change one thing right now, what would you like it to be?

I would like to see more public funding to help cover the cost of visits for uninsured and underinsured low-income patients.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in the last three years?

Ask for what you need. Give people the opportunity to support the Women’s Health Center by asking them to!

If you were asked to teach a class, what would it be?

How to shop for shoes online.

Who inspires you?

Jenny Yeaney, the Women’s Health Center Nurse Case Manager, for her absolute dedication (for decades!) to the clinic and patients. President Obama for his leadership skills.

What are you looking forward to?

An October trip to Hawaii. Watching the Women’s Health Center thrive and expand.
